“Trump Accounts” Information
The Trump administration has introduced *Trump Accounts* — a new type of tax-advantaged investment account designed specifically for American children. Authorized under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025, these accounts aim to give every eligible child a financial head start in life.
Eligibility: Any U.S. child under 18 with a valid Social Security number can have a Trump Account. Parents, guardians, or authorized individuals open them in the child’s name. Children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, qualify for a one-time $1,000 pilot contribution from the U.S. Treasury, deposited into their account.
Contributions: Families and others can contribute up to $5,000 per year (standard contributions). Employers can add up to $2,500 annually. Additional pathways exist for qualified gifts from states or nonprofits.
Investments: Funds are invested in low-cost index funds or ETFs tracking U.S. markets (e.g., S&P 500), promoting broad economic participation with strict rules against high-risk or leveraged options.
Tax Treatment: Growth is tax-deferred. The accounts function like a special traditional IRA while the child is under 18. Withdrawals before age 18 are restricted, with penalties for non-qualified uses. At 18, they transition to standard IRA rules.
The program will officially launch on July 4, 2026 — America’s 250th anniversary — with enrollment via IRS Form 4547 or the dedicated site trumpaccounts.gov. Early adoption has been strong, with millions of families already signing up. As of early 2026, nearly three dozen companies and philanthropists have pledged to match the U.S. Treasury’s initial $1,000 deposit into “Trump Accounts” including JPMorgan Chase, Charles Schwab, Bank of America, Intel, BlackRock, and Chipotle.
